Smart Bike

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009
It’s taken a little while (ok over a decade!) but it seems like big companies and local government head honchos are finally ready to put some time and money behind the development of bike sharing programs. The idea is old news in Europe but has yet to reach critical mass in the states.
If you’re in Washington, DC, check out Smart Bike to read more about America’s first self service public bike rental program. Come on Los Angeles! Catch on!!!

Go Blue Instead of Go Green?

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Going “Blue” kicked off its program as a way to help out Habitat for Humanity with free insulation.
Cotton Incorporated has been recycling old blue jeans into home insulation over the past few years. The program is called Cotton From Blue To Green and has taken thousands of blue jeans nationwide and turned them into home insulation.

Cotton Incorporated is teaming up with National Geographic Kids, hoping to break a world record for recycled clothes. Help support the cause and donate your jeans today at National Geographic Kids,

Let’s Start a Revolution!

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

If you’re in California you might have heard about a fantastic organization called Revolution Foods who have partnered with Whole Foods to provide fresh, nutritious meals and snacks, as well as nutrition education, for students, faculty and parents. Since it’s beginnings Revolution Foods has served over 100 programs throughout the Bay Area and Los Angeles. They also offer a website loaded with healthy food tips, recipes, and educational resources, as well as a line of lunchbox snacks. Does your state have an organizations doing something similar? Let us know!

Paris Going Green- Circa 2030

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

It is reassuring to know that there are global efforts worldwide in effect to help save our planet. French president Nicholas Sarkozy called on ten of the region’s top planning firms to design the city of Paris circa 2030 green inspired. He would like to claim the city of Paris to be the most green and environmentally sustainable in the world. If you are interested in seeing what “Le Grand Paris” (that is the name of their project) looks like take a look at Green Paris of 2030.

Maybe it is our turn to turn out the lights and transform Times Square into “Le Green Square”

Shiseido Working with Brazilian Manufacturer to Develop Sugarcane Based Containers

Monday, April 27th, 2009
I love that more and more renewable, sustainable alternatives for packaging are coming to market – first corn resin, then bamboo, now sugarcane.. awesome!

Japanese major cosmetics manufacturer Shiseido announced that it plans to jointly develop cosmetics containers made from sugarcane-derived polyethylene with Brazilian chemical manufacturer Braskem SA

Based on this development plan, Shiseido intends to replace its current cosmetics bottles and tubes with those made from sugarcane-based polyethylene starting in 2011, as a way to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions related to its cosmetics containers.

JetBlue going JetGreen?

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009
Hi all,
Now I like JetBlue as much as the next person. Low fairs, cute uniforms, convenient locations, what’s not to like?! But with all their recent efforts in the greenosphere they have officially won my heart. Which to be fair isn’t that hard but still.
Take a moment to check out all the ways that they are Jetting to Green. You can also  make a pledge to to JetBlue’s One Thing That’s Green Campaign for a chance to win a Toyota Prius or an HGTV Green Room Makeover. But you might want to wait until tomorrow. Seems like they are overun with environmentally friendly fliers who are amped up on  Earth Day!
I’ve been clicking in vain for 20 minutes now so I’m making a note to do it first thing tomorrow morning.

8 Earth Day Tricks to Go Green

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

The month of April is famous for the official start of Spring and Earth Day, so I thought I this copy article was appropriate.

1. Buy in Bulk
– Visit your local Sam’s club or Costco
2. Reduce Food-Related Paper Use
– Buy your children lunch boxes instead of brown paper bags.
3. Use Rechargeable Batteries
– For all your remotes and gadgets in the house.
4. Install a Programmable Thermostat
– Keeps the house a constant temperature too!
5. Print Only When Necessary
– Add a tagline on your emails to “Please Print Responsibly”
6. Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Lighting
– Not only are you helping the environment, you will save a couple bucks too!
7. Utilize Public Transportation
– Save on gas!
8. Attend a Household Hazardous Waste Event
– We are all guilty of the half empty paint cans in our basement and garages…

You can have fun, save money and save the environment all in the same act~
